Bangladesh, Myanmar sign aviation deal to boost trade, tourism
Jan 17, 2012, 15:59 GMT
Dhaka - Bangladesh and Myanmar on Tuesday signed an agreement to operate daily passenger flights between Dhaka and Yangon, the Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry said.
The agreement included private airlines and was aimed at 're-establishing air connectivity to help develop tourism, enhance bilateral trade and people-to-people contact,' said the ministry statement, following a meeting in Yangon between officials from both sides.
Four cargo flights are also scheduled per week.
Air services between Dhaka and Yangon have been stalled since 2007 when Bangladesh's national carrier Biman suspended flights to Myanmar because of financial losses.
During her visit to Myanmar in December, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed stressed the need for the resumption of air links.
