Delhi Commonwealth Games chief gets bail after 9 months in jail
Jan 19, 2012, 7:35 GMT
New Delhi - Suresh Kalmadi, chief of the organising committee of the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in the Indian capital, was granted bail by the High Court Thursday after spending nine months in jail.
Kalmadi, a lawmaker from the ruling Indian National Congress party, was arrested in April 2011 for his alleged role in awarding a contract to a Swiss timing company at an inflated rate.
Preparations for the games held in October 2010 were tainted by allegations of shoddy work and financial fraud.
The 37-million-dollar contract with Swiss Timing Ltd to provide timing, scoring and result systems is just one of the alleged financial irregularities being investigated.
Kalmadi was removed from his post of chairman of the organising committee in January 2011.
His earlier bail plea was rejected by a trial court after which Kalmadi approached the Delhi High Court.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's Congress party-led alliance government has been mired in a series of financial scandals over the past two years including financial misdealings relating to the games and another over the sale of telecommunications licences.
