Jan 19, 2012, 9:57 GMT
Kandahar, Afghanistan - A suicide bomber targeted a NATO airfield in southern Afghanistan on Thursday, killing three Afghan civilians, a senior Afghan army officer said.
The bombing took place near a NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) airbase in Kandahar province.
'A suicide car bomber blew himself up near Kandahar airport as NATO special forces were leaving,' Afghan Army General Abdul Hameed told dpa.
Hameed said that three Afghan civilians were killed and two others were wounded in the explosion.
Kandahar airfield is one of the foreign forces' largest military bases in southern Afghanistan.
A spokesman for NATO forces in Afghanistan said that a car bomb was detonated at the entry control gate of the airfield, causing Afghan civilian casualties.
'What I can you right now is that there are no ISAF service member causalities,' the alliance spokesman said.
