Afghan killing of French troops "isolated," NATO chief says
Jan 20, 2012, 11:14 GMT
Brussels - NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen called Friday a 'very sad day' after an Afghan soldier killed four French soldiers in Afghanistan, but was quick to describe the incident as 'isolated.'
'The reality is that every day, 130,000 ISAF troops from 50 nations fight and train with over 300,000 Afghan soldiers,' he said, referring to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. 'That takes a lot of trust among a lot of soldiers.'
'We have the same goal - an Afghanistan that is responsible for its own security. That is what Afghans want. And we remain committed to helping Afghans achieve that goal,' he added. 'Such tragic incidents are terrible, ... but they are isolated.'
Rasmussen also expressed his condolences for those killed, along with his 'sympathy' for those wounded, and paid tribute 'to the service and sacrifice of all our troops in Afghanistan.'
