Nepalis protest against fuel price hike
Jan 20, 2012, 11:39 GMT
Kathmandu - Nepal's government braced for a series of protests Friday as students and political parties took to the streets over fuel price hikes.
Students staged nationwide demonstrations, demanding the government withdraw a 10-per-cent increase in prices announced by the Nepal Oil Corporation on Wednesday.
Scuffles broke out between police and protestors in the capital Kathmandu. Some students were injured and six were detained.
The Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal picketed the office of the oil company.
Students have announced a week of protests and a nationwide strike on January 25, if the government does not revoke the price hike.
The government said it would not change the decision because the oil company was operating at a loss.
