Report: Al-Qaeda leader killed January 10 in Pakistan drone attack
Jan 20, 2012, 17:05 GMT
Washington - A CIA drone attack in Pakistan killed a suspected al-Qaeda leader, according to media reports on Friday.
The suspected operative, Aslam Awan, a Pakistani citizen, was reported as having been killed, according to The New York Times and Fox News. The attack reportedly took place on January 10 in Pakistan's tribal area, a US official told the Times.
The drone attack was the first in several months after a pause since the accidental killing in November of 24 Pakistani troops by US forces in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region.
The US blamed those killings on growing distrust between US and Pakistani military forces, which has escalated since a US special operations team killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in May on a secret mission not far from Pakistan's capital.
The drone attack on Aslam occurred near Miram Shah in north-western Pakistan, a center of militant activity, the Times reported.
