Jan 23, 2012, 7:37 GMT
New Delhi - At least two people were killed by a bomb outside the residence of a politician in India's north-eastern state of Manipur, reports said Monday.
Local militants carried out the attack near the home of Hemochandra Singh, speaker of the provincial assembly, on Sunday night, despite heavy security ahead of state elections, the Indian Express daily reported.
'There were dozens of party workers in my house at that point. One of my party workers has died while another has lost sight in both his eyes,' Singh told the newspaper. Another bystander was killed in the attack, local news channels reported.
Singh is the third candidate to be attacked by militants over the past fortnight. The polls are due on January 28.
About 20 militant groups are active in Manipur. Their demands range from secession to greater autonomy. According to government data, more than 7,000 people have been killed in militancy-related incidents in Manipur since 2002.
