Suspected US drone strike kills five in Pakistan
Jan 23, 2012, 8:06 GMT
Islamabad - At least five alleged militants were killed Monday by a US unmanned aircraft in north-western Pakistan, intelligence officials said.
The attack hit a compound and one vehicle in the village of Degan in the Data Khel area near Miransha, the main town in North Waziristan, an intelligence official said on condition of anonymity.
North Waziristan is one of the seven tribal districts on the border with Afghanistan where al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters are believed to have established hideouts.
'At least five people were killed,' the official said. 'The locals are searching to find whether any dead or injured are still trapped in the debris.'
There were fears that the death toll could rise, another intelligence official said.
It was the third attack in the last two weeks, which have claimed a total of 13 lives.
The United States had stopped its drone attacks for the six previous weeks, amid escalating tensions with Islamabad after 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed by a NATO airstrike on a border post in late November.
