Srinagar, Kashmir - A soldier was killed Tuesday by an avalanche in India-administered Kashmir which left another seven missing, officials said.
The incident took place in snow-bound Kupwara district, near the line of control that separates the two parts of Kashmir administered by India and Pakistan.
'A group of personnel of the Indian Army and the paramilitary Border Security Force were clearing snow from a road when the avalanche occurred,' army spokesman lieutenant colonel JS Brar said.
The road was located about 136 kilometres north of Jammu and Kashmir state capital Srinagar.
Authorities have issued several avalanche warnings in the higher reaches of the Kashmir valley due to heavy snowfall this year.
