Sri Lanka arrests 43 Indian fishermen in national waters
Jan 25, 2012, 12:06 GMT
Colombo - The Sri Lankan Navy arrested 43 Indian fishermen for illegally entering Sri Lankan waters, officials said Wednesday.
Sri Lankan forces also seized six fishing trawlers off the coast of Mullaitivu late Tuesday night when their occupants were found to be fishing in the area, Navy spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya said.
He said those arrested were handed over to the police for further investigations.
Sri Lanka and India last week discussed ways of reducing cases of poaching by fishermen. They discussed joint patrols, but have yet to finalize a programme.
