Bangladesh president says any coup attempt must not be tolerated
Jan 25, 2012, 15:02 GMT
Dhaka - Bangladeshi President Muhammad Zillur Rahman said on Wednesday that any attempt to overthrow the democratically elected government must not be tolerated, a week after the army thwarted a coup plan by soldiers with links to Islamist groups.
'Any evil attempt to thwart this democratic process cannot be desirable for any of us; rather, any such attempt must never be tolerated,' he told parliament in an annual address.
The military last week said it had arrested several officers involved in a plan by Islamic fanatics to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed.
Hasina has been facing threats from Islamists and other radicals since she took office in January 2009. Bangladesh, which has a history of military coups, was ruled by army generals for 15 years, until 1990.
