New Delhi - A battered 2-year-old girl was in critical condition at a New Delhi hospital after being brought in with human bite marks and severe brain damage, news reports said Friday.
The toddler was brought to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences last week by a 15-year-old girl who claimed to be her mother, broadcaster NDTV reported.
She had brain injuries, fractures to both upper arms and human bites to her face, MC Mishra, the head of the hospital's trauma centre, told NDTV.
The injuries were suspected to resulting from abuse, he said.
Police launched an investigation to determine how the toddler was injured as the case drew outrage in the Indian media.
The girl was in the intensive care unit and her chances of survival were put about 40 per cent after she suffered two cardiac arrests after operations.
Doctors said that if she survived, she would still have considerable brain damage.
During questioning, the 15-year-old admitted she was not the toddler's mother and had gotten her from a male friend. She allegedly admitted to beating the girl but denied biting her, the report said.
