State elections in India's Punjab, Uttarakhand
Jan 30, 2012, 7:02 GMT
New Delhi - Voters cast ballots in India's northern states of Punjab and Uttarakhand Monday, in what was considered a test for the major parties before general elections scheduled in 2014.
The north-eastern state of Manipur conducted balloting Saturday. Voting is scheduled in the most-populous state of Uttar Pradesh in seven phases between February 4-28.
The Indian National Congress party, the leading partner in the ruling federal coalition, is in the opposition in both Punjab and Uttarakhand states.
The Hindu right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party runs the government in Uttarakhand. In Punjab, it is part of a coalition government led by the regional Shiromani Akali Dal party.
