Factory building collapses in Pakistan, dozens trapped
Feb 6, 2012, 7:47 GMT
Islamabad - At least two people were killed and dozens more trapped when a three-storey factory building collapsed Monday in Pakistan's eastern city of Lahore, officials said.
The building collapsed due to a gas explosion that also brought down two nearby houses.
Police official Sarfraz Falki said rescue workers had pulled two bodies and eight injured people from the debris.
'According to some estimates there are between 70 and 80 people that are trapped under the rubble,' Falki said. 'We fear that the death toll might rise significantly.'
Officials said the factory produced veterinary pharmaceuticals and was illegally established in the residential area.
'It was sealed three times but I don't understand how this was reopened. We should ask the concerned departments,' senior police officer Malik Ahmad Raza Tahir said.
