New Delhi - At least 26 people from a wedding party were killed in a road accident in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said Wednesday.
The accident took place Tuesday night when the overcrowded mini-bus collided head-on with a speeding truck in the district of Mainpuri.
'Twenty-six people were killed in the accident while 13 injured were admitted to a hospital,' police chief Chandrahaas Tiwari said by telephone.
He said the victims were on their way to a wedding in the adjoining district of Etah.
India has one of the highest rates for traffic fatalities in the world. Government data shows approximately 120,000 people are killed in road accidents each year.
