Pakistani Premier Gilani files appeal in contempt case
Feb 8, 2012, 8:50 GMT
Islamabad - Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani Wednesday filed an appeal against appearing in person before the Supreme Court in a contempt case hearing for failing to reopen corruption cases against the president.
His lawyer Aitzaz Ahsan confirmed that he had filed the appeal.
Last week, the Supreme Court said it would charge Gilani with contempt of court - and summoned him to appear on February 13 - over his refusal to ask Switzerland to investigate President Asif Ali Zardari for alleged money laundering.
Gilani has argued that as head of state, Zardari enjoys immunity from prosecution.
The Swiss cases, which date back to the mid-1990s, were closed at the request of Pakistan under a controversial reconciliation order.
The order involved a deal between the Pakistan Peoples Party and former military strongman Pervez Musharraf, under which many people - including Zardari - were granted immunity from corruption and other criminal charges.
