Police fire on demonstration in Sri Lanka, one killed
Feb 15, 2012, 12:14 GMT
Colombo - Police opened fire on fishermen protesting against increased fuel prices in north-western Sri Lanka Wednesday, killing one and injuring three, officials said.
Demonstrators set fire to two police motorcycles and stoned the residence of a judge as an estimated 15,000 fishermen and their families protested in Chilaw, 60 kilometers north of Colombo.
The government raised fuel prices Sunday 35 per cent for a litre of diesel and 50 per cent for kerosene.
The increases sparked a nationwide strike by private bus operators on Monday, and the government immediately allowed them to raise fares by 20 per cent.
Fishermen are demanding concessions on purchases of diesel and kerosene for their boats.
