Officials accuse Taliban of beheading four Afghan civilians
Feb 22, 2012, 6:03 GMT
Kabul - Afghan officials said Tuesday that four civilians were beheaded by insurgents in southern Afghanistan.
The victims were accused of spying for government and international forces, a statement from the Helmand provincial governor's office said.
The beheadings took place in two areas of the province's Washir district on Sunday night, it said.
'These people had no relations with the government and they were civilians and innocent,' it said.
Witnesses were quoted as saying the victims were killed because they were carrying satellite phones and suspected of spying.
'People don't have access to telephones in remote areas of the district and most people use satellite phones,' the statement said.
Taliban officials were not available for comment.
