Traditional Ryukyu Kingdom New Year's ceremony being held at Shurijo Castle in Naha city, Okinawa, 01 January 2011. The ceremony is a re-enactment of a Quing era (1723-1735) Ryukyu Kingdom event in which the king performs prayers in Chinese for the well being of the kingdom. The ritual ceremony was attended traditionally attended by the Ryukyu King and royal family, high-ranking officials and ministers as well as local community leaders. Participants stood in a solemn atmosphere to celebrate the new year and to pray for peace.
