Britain's queen remembers tsunami, terrorism victims in speech
Dec 26, 2005, 12:47 GMT
London - Britain's Queen Elizabeth II on Sunday in her traditional Christmas message praised the worldwide aid effort for those affected by various catastrophes of the last 12 months including the South-East Asian tsunami a year ago.
The British monarch also remembered world conflict and terrorism including the London attacks of July 7, saying that 2005 seemed to her a year where 'the world had turned on itself'.
The South Asian tsunami on December 26, 2004 killed 225,000 people. A total of 56 persons died and 700 were injured in the attacks on the London transport system.
The Queen emphasized that in the midst of these tragedies there was 'an instinct in all of us to help those in distress' adding that this response is often 'inspired by those of religious faith'.
The principle of loving one's neighbour is not only the possession of Christianity, she said, but other religions as well, and called on all people to obey Christmas' message of peace.
