Nov 15, 2006, 18:23 GMT
London - Britain's Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, will pay a state visit to the United States in May next year, the monarch announced Wednesday.
The visit will celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement, America's first permanent English settlement, situated near what is now Williamsburg, Virginia.
The Queen made the announcement at the annual Opening of Parliament ceremony in London, during which she outlines the government programme for the forthcoming year.
It will be the fourth state visit to the US for the Queen and Prince Philip, who visited the US in 1957, 1976 and 1991.
In addition, the royal couple made an official visit to the west coast of the US in 1983.
