British court sends members of 'al-Qaeda cell' to jail
Jun 15, 2007, 13:33 GMT
London - Seven members of a British-based al-Qaeda cell involved in a plot to kill 'hundreds if not thousands' of people in Britain and the United States were sentenced to a total of 136 years in prison in London Friday.
The 'sleeper cell' had been planning to explode a 'dirty' radiation bomb in London, blow up underground car parks and the Heathrow Express, as well as targeting buildings in New York and New Jersey.
Mohammed Naveed Bhatti, Junade Feroze, Zia Ul Haq, Abdul Aziz Jalil, Omar Abdur Rehman, Qaisar Shaffi and Nadeem Tarmohamed were given prison sentences ranging from 15 to 26 years.
The men belonged to a cell led by Dhiren Barot, who was sentenced to life imprisonment last November.
They were involved in a 'cowardly plot,' the presiding judge said during sentencing at Woolwich Crown Court in London.
They were all arrested in 2004.
