Terror suspect's wife appeals to Indian government
Jul 16, 2007, 9:11 GMT
New Delhi - The wife of the Indian doctor charged in Australia in connection with a failed terror plot appealed to the Indian government Monday to intervene to end the 'harassment' of her husband.
'An innocent Indian citizen is being harassed even when there is no evidence against him and I appeal to Indian authorities to help end this,' Firdous Arshiya was quoted as saying by IANS news agency.
Her appeal came after the Australian authorities invoked immigration laws to detain Mohammed Haneef, 27, shortly after a Brisbane court granted him bail in connection with the failed terror plot in Britain.
'They are simply trying to detain him even though they know that there is nothing against him,' Haneef's wife told reporters in the southern Indian city of Bangalore.
Claiming that Haneef was innocent, she appealed to the Indian External Affairs Ministry to intervene.
Firdous, who is a software engineer, also said she was sending her cousin 'who is quite knowledgeable' to Australia to help her husband.
