First-ever British bluetongue infection reported in Suffolk cow
Sep 23, 2007, 17:44 GMT
London - A livestock disease never before reported in Britain has been diagnosed in a cow on a Suffolk farm, British authorities reported late Saturday.
Bluetongue disease, a viral fever that afflicts livestock, was confirmed in one animal, and other livestock on the farm in the Ipswich area were being tested, an official from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said.
The source of the infection was being investigated.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown was notified of the new problem for British livestock farms, which were already grappling with persistent cases of foot-and-mouth disease in Surrey, after that virus leaked from a laboratory.
