Chinese-made toys recalled over drugs fears
By Rich Bowden, M&C Staff Writer Nov 9, 2007, 12:32 GMT
(M&C) - The British distributor of a Chinese-made toy has asked retailers and consumers to return a product which has hospitalised US and Australian children.
Character Group said the toy, Bindeez, contain a coating which if swallowed metabolises into the gamma hydroxy butyrate (GHB) -- a precursor to the infamous "date rape" drug.
Character Group has said it is of the opinion that an "unapproved formulation" may have used by the manufacturers.
Richard King, chairman of Character Group, said: "We believe that the product we have is safe, but it's going to be some time until we get results of the toxicology test reports and rather than take a chance, safety is of prime importance and therefore we have taken this precaution."
The British recall of the product comes after reports of US and Australian children being hospitalised after swallowing the beads.
