(M&C) - A cabinet split over a proposal to make inciting hatred against homosexuals a criminal offence has put the plan at risk.
Justice Secretary Jack Straw last month last month announced plans to extend the current law on incitement to cover homophobic behaviour. Mr Straw said he would like to see the law cover hatred towards disabled and transgendered people.
However Attorney-General Baroness Scotland of Asthal has questioned the need for such a law believing sufficient laws are already in existence to deal with the problem.
According to the Times, Baroness Scotland has indicated she would prefer to see improvements to current legislation to deal with the problem of homophobic behaviour rather than implementing a new law.
It is believed Mr Straw wished to introduce the law to mirror current laws extended to protect minorities against incitement to race hatred, laws which carry a jail sentence of seven years.

Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
Romans 1:24 (KJV)
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
Romans 1:26-27 (KJV)
