Britain praises "excellent" ties with Turkey in London talks

Apr 14, 2008, 15:32 GMT

London - Britain on Monday pledged its 'steadfast support' for Turkey to become a fully-fledged member of the European Union while applauding the reform programme launched by the government in Ankara.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband, speaking after talks in London with his Turkish counterpart Ali Babacan, said relations between Turkey and Britain were 'closer than ever before' at political, economic and cultural level.

'Bilateral relations are deep, excellent and sincerely felt,' said Miliband, adding that London 'applauded' the progress made under the Turkish government's reform programme.

Turkey had a pivotal role to play on regional issues, such as the conflict in Iraq and concern over Iran's nuclear programme, Miliband said.

Both men had also discussed the situation in Afghanistan and expressed their commitment to stability and democracy in Pakistan, he said.

Queen Elizabeth II is scheduled to pay a state visit to Turkey in May.

The British government might be keen but you will be hard pressed to find any Briton who is enthusiastic. In fact they are not all that enthusiastic about their own government, it's the worst government this country has ever had.
