Crisis-hit British publican allows revellers to bring own drink
Mar 3, 2009, 14:16 GMT
London - A British pub owner who found that revellers were staying away because of the credit crunch has come up with the idea of inviting punters to bring along their own drink on a Saturday night.
Bip Wetherell, who runs The Venue, in Corby, in the central county of Northamptonshire, said he also hoped to beat off stiff competition from supermarkets which were selling cheap alcohol consumed by people at home.
'Our trade's down and I decided to reverse it on the supermarkets and use their low prices. We had people queuing up with their supermarket bags and it was a great night,' Wetherell said after the successful launch of his initiative.
However, people would still have to pay an entry fee of 5 pounds (7 dollars) to cover the costs for security and a DJ hired for Saturday night.
A record number of pubs have been closing every week in Britain, according to figures published last month. A total of 39 pubs are shutting every week, three more than last year, the British Beer and Pub Association said.
