Six injured in lift accident at London's Tower Bridge (Roundup)
May 11, 2009, 15:05 GMT
London - Six people, five visitors and a staff member, were taken to hospital Monday after a lift in London's famous Tower Bridge 'suddenly dropped' by about three metres, the authorities said.
'The incident happened when the lift to the Tower Bridge exhibition was on the way down. It did not fall from the top, it fell the last 10ft (3 metres) - it suddenly dropped,' said a spokeswoman for the City of London Corporation, the authority responsible for security at the major tourist attraction.
'The door automatically opened. Six people were injured. We were told they were lower limb injuries, such as broken ankles and legs,' she added.
While the injured were taken to nearby hospitals, another 10 people in the lift left the scene without any injuries. The lift can carry up to 40 people.
A full investigation was being launched into the incident, said the spokeswoman. Sky News reported that the lift had 'plummeted,' possibly after a cable snapped.
