Jul 9, 2009, 16:32 GMT
London - A 49-year-old science teacher at a central English school has been arrested on suspicion of the attempted murder of a 14-year-old pupil in a classroom set-to, police confirmed Thursday.
The whole class was said to have been 'traumatised' by the incident, in which, according to police, 'a weapon' was used. Unofficial reports spoke of the boy having been struck with a weight.
The boy was said to be in serious condition in a local hospital following the incident at All Saints' Roman Catholic School in Mansfield. Two other pupils were also injured.
Police confirmed that science teacher Peter Harvey was being questioned by detectives. They said there were a 'number of witnesses' to the incident.
The school - which calls itself on its website 'a lively, Catholic comprehensive school with a very special, warm ethos which is recognised by all who visit' - declined to comment 'at this time'.
