No mail today: Britain faces wave of strikes by Royal Mail workers

London - Mail services in Britain will be hit by a massive strike by postal workers in a worsening row over jobs, pay and conditions, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) said Thursday.
It said 25,000 workers, including drivers of Royal Mail lorries, will walk out from Friday to next Monday across the country in what it said would be the biggest national stoppage since 2007.
The union said it had been forced to strike because cuts were being made to pay, jobs and services without agreement. It said more strikes were likely in the autumn.
The Royal Mail has accused the union of reneging on a deal which ended the 2007 strike and was aimed at modernizing the service.
'Having met the union more than 50 times in recent months, it is increasingly clear that the CWU refuses to believe that mail volumes are declining despite the clear evidence of this.'
