Britain's Peter Mandelson in hospital for routine operation
Aug 21, 2009, 8:56 GMT
London - Britain's business secretary Peter Mandelson has been admitted to a hospital for a routine operation on a 'benign condition of the prostate,' a government spokesman said Friday.
Mandelson, 55, is effectively the second most powerful man in the British government after Prime Minister Gordon Brown, for whom he has been standing in during the summer recess.
Brown recalled Mandelson, a former close ally of ex-prime minister Tony Blair, into the cabinet last October in a surprise move.
The colourful politician has since gained a reputation as the government's chief troubleshooter and 'saviour' of the flagging Brown premiership.
He has previously held a string of ministerial posts and been Trade Commissioner at the EU Commission in Brussels.
The spokesman said Mandelson would stay in St Mary's London's Paddington district overnight. He was treated there for kidney stones last year.
