Blair says Cherie was behind his conversion to Catholicism
Aug 28, 2009, 12:30 GMT
London - Former British prime minister Tony Blair confirmed Friday that his wife, Cherie, was instrumental in making him convert to Catholicism after leaving office two years ago.
Blair, who now runs the Tony Blair Faith Foundation, switched from the Anglican Church to Catholicism in 2007.
'Ever since I began preparations to become a Catholic, I felt I was coming home; and this is now where my heart is, where I know I belong,' Blair was reported as saying.
In further remarks he made at a religious meeting in Italy, Blair is quoted as saying: 'Frankly, this all began with my wife. I began to go to Mass and we went together. ``We could have gone to the Anglican or Catholic church - guess who won?'
'There was something, not just about the doctrine of the Church, but of the universal nature of the Catholic Church,' he said.
Cherie Blair, a high-profile barrister, is a Roman Catholic and the couple's four children have all been christened in the faith.
