Stuck in the post - British strikes cause massive backlog
Oct 23, 2009, 13:48 GMT
London - Strike action by Royal Mail workers in Britain has led to 30 million letters being delayed so far, the company said Friday.
The revelation came on the second day of a nationwide strike in which 78,000 delivery and collection workers were called out.
On Thursday, up to 42,000 mail centre staff and network drivers took part in walkouts which were preceded by a wave of so-called rolling strikes over the past few months.
The postal workers union CWU accuses state-owned Royal Mail of refusing to reveal the true extent of job losses and the threat to pensions resulting from a massive modernization programme.
Negotations broke down earlier this week. The union has called three more days of strikes for next week.
