Car bomb wounds policeman in Northern Ireland; Republicans blamed
Jan 8, 2010, 17:52 GMT
London - A 33-year-old policeman in Northern Ireland was critically injured Friday when a car bomb blew up his vehicle as he was driving to work, reported the Press Association. Local officials blamed militant Republicans for the attack.
The policeman was undergoing surgery Friday afternoon.
Detective Chief Superintendent Derek Williamson branded the attackers 'faceless cowardly thugs.
'They skulked under the cover of darkness to try and kill or injure this officer,' he said. 'It's too early to know exactly who was responsible, but it's likely to have been dissident Republicans.'
The car bomb went off in the vicinity of Antrim, where two British soldiers were murdered outside the Massereene barracks by the Real IRA last March. Despite a peace treaty signed almost 12 years ago, militants in the region seeking unification with Ireland continue to stage regular attacks.
