Britain to treble aid for Haiti quake victims (Extra)
Jan 18, 2010, 8:26 GMT
London - Britain is set to treble its aid to victims of the earthquake in Haiti to 20 million pounds (32 million dollars), the Department for International Development said Monday.
The increase from an initial 6.2 million pounds will be officially announced at Monday's meeting in Brussels of European Union (EU) development ministers, a spokesman said.
'Our initial assessments show a level of humanitarian need which would severely test the international response in any circumstances. But the impact of this earthquake is magnified because it has hit a country that was already desperately poor and historically volatile,' Development Secretary Douglas Alexander said.
The British public has donated more than 15 million pounds to aid agencies following an appeal launched last week.
