London - A rare self-portrait by leading French Impressionist Edouard Manet was sold for 22.4 million pounds (33.1 million dollars) at Sotheby's Tuesday in London, the auction house said.
The Self-Portrait with a Palette, painted in 1878-79, is one of just two self-portraits that exist of Manet, who is known as the 'father of Impressionism.'
It had been estimated to fetch between 20 million and 30 million pounds. The buyer of the painting, which had been in private hands, was not named.
