Britain to supply India with civil nuclear technology
Jul 28, 2010, 8:26 GMT
London - Britain is to permit the export of civil nuclear technology and expertise to India for the first time, Business Secretary Vince Cable announced during a visit to India Wednesday.
The move had traditionally been opposed by the Foreign Office and the Ministry of Defence because India is not a signatory of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the Press Association reported.
But Cable, during a visit to Bangalore, said the government had decided that in future nuclear export licences would normally be granted where they concerned India.
Cable, a Liberal Democrat, is part of a large trade delegation accompanying British Prime Minister David Cameron on his current visit to India.
