London - Turkish President Abdullah Gul received an award Tuesday in London recognizing his contribution to improving international relations.
Gul was presented the annual Chatham House Prize by Queen Elizabeth II at a ceremony late Tuesday in London.
'You have provided notable leadership and international statesmanship over many years,' the queen told him.
The Turkish president was praised for deepening his country's ties with the Middle East, mediating between opposing groups in Iraq and bringing together the Afghan and Pakistani leaderships in a bid to resolve disputes.
His efforts to secure Turkey's place in the European Union (EU) and improving standards of democracy and human rights were also recognized at the award ceremony.
Chatham House, also known as the Royal Institute of International Affairs, is Britain's leading foreign policy think tank.
Its annual award is presented to a statesman deemed to have made the most significant contribution to supporting international relations.
