Student protest sparks evacuation of British party offices (1st Lead)
Nov 10, 2010, 16:13 GMT
London - Protesting students on Wednesday attempted to force their way into the headquarters of Britain's conservative party, prompting an evacuation of the building in central London.
The students were among and estimated 50,000 students and lecturers from across the country taking part in a demonstration against plans to hike the cost of tuition, according to media reports.
A window of the 30-storey, which houses the Tory Party along with a number of government agencies, was reportedly smashed when a group of around 100 students broke away from the main demonstration and entered the Millbank Tower complex.
Police intervened to disperse the placard-wielding students.
Hundreds of people were evacuated after a fire alarm was sounded, a witness was quoted as saying.
The government plans to cut university funding and raise tertiary tuition fees to around 9,000 pounds (14,500 dollars) a year in 2012. Students at universities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland currently pay around 3,200 pounds tuition a year.
