British leaders praise Holbrooke's work for peace
Dec 14, 2010, 11:47 GMT
London - British Prime Minister David Cameron Tuesday praised top US diplomat Richard Holbrooke as an 'indefatigable champion in the cause of peace' and 'true public servant.'
'He was a formidable force of American diplomacy - an indefatigable champion in the cause of peace, who worked tirelessly for a better world,' said Cameron in a tribute to Holbrooke, who has died in Washington.
Holbrooke would be most remembered for his pre-eminent role in ending the 'vicious war in Bosnia, where his force of personality and his negotiating skill combined to drive through the Dayton peace agreement and put a halt to the fighting.'
Foreign Secretary William Hague said Holbrooke was 'truly one of the best and the brightest of his generation' who served the US 'with distinction and integrity.'
Sherard Cowper-Coles, the former British ambassador to Kabul, said of Holbrooke: 'He is a giant. This is a tragedy for America and it's also a tragedy for Afghanistan and Pakistan.'
