London - British film director Peter Yates, best-known for Bullitt, the 1968 American thriller starring Steve McQueen, has died at the age of 81, his agent said in London on Monday.
Yates made his debut as a director in 1963 with the Cliff Richard film Summer Holiday, and went on to make more than a dozen films, including the 1973 downbeat thriller The Friends Of Eddie Coyle.
Bullitt, based on the novel Mute Witness by Robert L Fish, was a huge box office success probably best remembered for its epic car chase through the streets of San Francisco.
Yates was nominated for Oscars in 1979 and 1983 but failed to win. He died in London on Sunday after a long illness, his agent said.
