Former foreign secretary Miliband turns to football and teaching

Jan 12, 2011, 10:39 GMT

London - Former British foreign secretary David Miliband, beaten by his younger brother Ed to the Labour Party leadership last year, is to spend time working for his favourite football club and teaching at his old school, reports said Wednesday.

The Daily Mail said David, 45, was in talks to take over a non-executive role as vice-chairman of Sunderland Football Club in his constituency of South Shields, in north-east England.

The former Labour Party high flyer, who is a fan of top London Club Arsenal, is also planning to teach politics at his former school, Haverstock School, in north London, in a voluntary role.

Miliband, who enjoyed a steep career in the governments of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, was narrowly beaten to the Labour Party crown by his younger brother last September. He withdrew from politics as a result, though pundits have not ruled out a comeback over time.
