Thatcher handbag sold for charitable cause at London auction
Jun 27, 2011, 22:57 GMT
London - A handbag that once belonged to former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher was sold for 25,000 pounds (40,000 dollars) at auction at Christie's in London Monday.
The black leather bag, which Thatcher wore during a 1985 meeting with former US president Ronald Reagan, was among prize lots during an auction for charitable causes, Christie's said.
It was sold to an unnamed Cypriot who was a student in Britain when Thatcher was in power between 1979 and 1990.
The 85-year-old former leader, who was famous for her handbags as a symbol of her authority, donated the accessory to a special auction conducted by Jeffrey Archer, the former politician and best-selling author.
In line with her specification, the proceeds from the sale will go to a number of charities, including the British Forces Foundation and the mental health charity Combat Stress which looks after soldiers suffering from traumatic stress syndrome on their return from war zones.
