Jul 22, 2011, 2:29 GMT
London - The British artist Lucian Freud, who made a name for himself with his realistic, uncompromising nudes that showed every fold and wrinkle, has died at 88, media reports said late Thursday.
His agent Diana Rawstron said he died Wednesday at his home in London, the Press Association reported.
'The vitality of his nudes, the intensity of the still-life paintings and the presence of his portraits of family and friends guarantee Lucian Freud a unique place in the pantheon of late 20th century art,' said Nicholas Serota, director of the Tate art gallery.
Freud was born in Berlin in 1922 and was the grandson of the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud.
When the Nazis took power in Germany in 1933, Lucian Freud left with his family to live in Britain.
