Britain's Tate galleries report bumper year for visitors
Sep 8, 2011, 14:05 GMT
London - Britain's Tate art galleries, which include the flagship Tate Modern museum on the banks of the river Thames in London, said Thursday that a record 7.4 million visitors came through its doors between April 2010 and March 2011.
'This makes Tate the most popular arts organization in the world after the Louvre in Paris,' said a statement released in London.
Apart from the Tate Modern, the group includes the Tate Britain in London - which has an emphasis on British art - and the Tate galleries in Liverpool and in St.Ives, Cornwall.
London's Tate Modern, which ranks among the world's most visited modern art galleries, Thursday also announced plans to extend its space for exhibitions and performances in time for next year's Olympic Games in the British capital.
The Tate Modern, housed in a disused power station, plans to open the site's huge former oil tanks which have been transformed into 'exciting new spaces for art' at a cost of 215 million pounds (345 million dollars), a statement said.
