Queen Victoria bloomers prove prime attraction at auction
Nov 2, 2011, 16:49 GMT
London - The apparently enduring appeal of royal memorabilia was in evidence at an auction in Britain on Wednesday, where a pair of white silk bloomers worn by Queen Victoria sold for 9,375 pounds (15,000 dollars), auctioneers said.
The price paid by anonymous buyers of the precious underwear exceeded its original estimate of 3,000 pounds by more than three times.
The knickers worn by Queen Victoria, who ruled from 1837 to 1901, were part of a collection of items from Old Battersea House - the former London home of the Forbes family, the American publishing dynasty.
The sale at auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull in Edinburgh, Scotland, made a total of more than 3 million pounds.
Among items on offer were more than 500 royal paintings, letters and furniture, including a four-poster bed in which the late Elizabeth Taylor once slept.
