John Lennon "Bed Peace" poster strikes a cord at London auction
Nov 15, 2011, 18:32 GMT
London - A poster made by ex-Beatle John Lennon during his anti-Vietnam war 'bed-in' protest with Yoko Ono in Montreal in 1969 sold for 97,250 pounds (154,628 dollars) at auction in London Tuesday, auction house Christie's said.
The placard, reading 'Bed Peace' in capital letters, was purchased by an anonymous buyer at a sale of rock memorabilia, which also auctioned an autographed letter by fellow Beatle Paul McCartney.
The letter, written in response to an advertisement in the Liverpool Echo newspaper, offered the anonymous person who placed the advert an audition for the position of drummer in the famous group.
It was later found folded up in a book during a car boot sale in Liverpool and sold for 34,850 pounds to a European private buyer, Christie's said. It had been estimated to fetch between 7,000 and 9,000 pounds.
