LEAD: Prince William co-pilots helicopter rescue off Wales
Nov 27, 2011, 16:47 GMT
London - Britain's Prince William co-piloted a Sea King helicopter which rescued two people from a sinking ship in the Irish Sea off the coast of Wales, the Ministry of Defence said Sunday.
The ship, the Swanland, was carrying 3,000 tons of limestone to the Isle of Wight. One body was later found, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said. Five crew remained missing.
Crew members radioed for support at 0200 GMT after the hull of the 81-metre boat was said to have sprung a leak when an 'enormous wave' struck. The crew were described as Russians, although the freighter is registered in the Cook Islands.
William, second in line for the throne, is an Air Force pilot based at Anglesey in Wales.
