Clegg says "coalition here to stay" despite differences
Dec 12, 2011, 17:55 GMT
London - British Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg vowed Monday that his party's coalition government with the Conservatives is 'here to stay,' despite differences with the Conservatives over Europe.
Clegg, who had earlier made point of staying away from a key parliamentary debate on last week's fractious European Union (EU) summit, said he would now work to 'build bridges' in Europe.
He had made it clear to Prime Minister David Cameron that he did not agree with his wielding of the British veto.
Although he regretted that Conservatives and Liberals did 'not agree on the significant issue' of Europe, the coalition government 'is here to stay,' said Clegg. He would now work to 'build bridges to make sure that Britain is heard at the top table of Europe.'
